We are looking for people to help us transform the legal education industry by bringing new technology and products to market.

We have an opening for a Chief Financial Officer.  The CFO is responsible for the administrative, financial and risk management operations of West Academic including the development of a financial and operational strategy, metrics tied to that strategy, and the ongoing development and monitoring of control systems designed to preserve company assets and report accurate financial results.

Job Responsibilities


  • Develop annual financial plan and participate in creating long term financial projections
  • Participate as a member of the Operating Committee in developing long term strategic plans for the enterprise
  • Direct the implementation of strategic business plans
  • Develop financial and tax strategies
  • Manage capital budget and expenditure processes


  • Participate in key decisions as a member of the executive management team
  • Manage the accounting, financial, and customer service departments
  • Lead the manufacturing and distribution operations team
  • Oversee the company’s transaction processing systems (ERP)
  • Implement operational best practices and ensure appropriate documentation 

Financial Information

  • Oversee the issuance of financial information
  • Ensure compliance of reporting and covenant requirements to financial institutions
  • Report financial and operational results to the board of directors
  • Maintain banking relationships 

Risk Management

  • Understand and mitigate key elements of the company’s risk profile
  • Construct and monitor reliable control systems
  • Maintain appropriate business insurance coverage
  • Ensure the company complies with all legal and regulatory requirements
  • Ensure record keeping meets the requirements of auditors and government agencies
  • Report risk issues to the board of directors
  • Maintain relations with external auditors and investigate their findings and recommendations 


  • Monitor cash balances and cash forecasts
  • Arrange for debt and equity funding 


  • Recruit, hire, develop and retain high performance finance and accounting staff.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration or equivalent business experience
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible financial roles for a major company or division
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Excellent consensus building and facilitation skills
  • Strong customer relationship building skills
  • Demonstrated ability to develop relationships across a wide range of diverse groups and organizational levels
  • Ability to balance corporate and financial objectives
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to handle multiple, high level tasks simultaneously
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills

Desired Skills

  • CPA Certification preferred (Active or Inactive)
  • Experience working in publishing or the legal environment preferred
